Ithaca, N.Y. . . Finger Lakes ReUse is excited to announce that November 12th 2018 marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of Triphammer ReUse Center.
The Triphammer ReUse Center opened in 2008 at the Triphammer Marketplace to provide a convenient and affordable way to donate, purchase and reuse materials including household goods, furniture, building materials, refurbished computers, computer peripherals and home electronics. Initially launched with a pooled investment of $700 and founding support from Tompkins County Recycling and Materials Management, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County, Ithaca College, Cornell University, the Park Foundation and the Appalachian Regional Commission, Finger Lakes ReUse is modeled on several successful reuse-based business models around the country with a mission to enhance community, economy and environment through the deceptively simple act of reusing valuable materials. Today, Finger Lakes ReUse is completing its 10th year of operations returning an estimated 1.4 million items back into use annually with a $1.3 million budget, 37 living wage employees and 60 regular volunteers and hundreds of other volunteers and supporters making this possible.
“It’s amazing to think that it has been ten years! There is still much to do – we are gaining momentum and this is just the beginning,” says Executive Director Diane Cohen.
Starting with only a handful of employees, Finger Lakes ReUse has grown to provide community benefit programs, each designed to address key local issues. Current programs include two ReUse Centers creating job opportunities and room for career advancement for people who have experienced traditional barriers to employment; the ReSET job training program providing engaging, hands-on work experience in high-demand occupational fields; the eCenter computer refurbishing and repair program; Deconstruction and Salvage Services, an alternative to traditional demolition practices; the Ithaca Fixers Collective, a volunteer-run group dedicated to repairing reusable items; and the ReUse Materials Access Program, a pilot program connecting local people and nonprofits with the materials they need.
“Barbara Eckstrom, Director of the Recycling & Materials Management Division had a vision for a ReUse Center in Tompkins County many, many years ago. The support and gratitude we receive from our donors and customers every day are so meaningful. Knowing that we are all working together to make our world healthier makes it worth the hard work, and enormous amounts of energy that I watch staff members and volunteers contribute day in and day out. It’s a real phenomenon, and a true pleasure to be a part of,” Diane Cohen noted.
Finger Lakes ReUse has received support from Tompkins County Recycling and Materials Management, Park Foundation, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County, Ithaca College, Cornell University, Community Foundation of Tompkins County, The Cascade Alliance, Triad Foundation, Ithaca Urban Renewal Agency, the Friendship Fund of GMA Foundation, NYS Energy Research and Development Authority, NYS Empire State Development, The Legacy Foundation, United Way of Tompkins County, Rotary Club of Ithaca, Social Service League, Women Building Community, Triphammer Development, The Appalachian Regional Commission and others, in addition to individual and private donations and collaborations with other community programs.
