About the Reinforce ReUse Challenge

The Ithaca ReUse Center first opened to the public in December 2015. Our second ReUse Center in the Ithaca area, this location has created living wage job opportunities and is home to the ReSET job training program, the eCenter computer refurbishing and repair program; and the Ithaca Fixers Collective. In response to high and increasing community engagement in reuse activities over its 10-year history, Finger Lakes ReUse is planning to expand operations over the next several years. Finalizing the purchase of the Ithaca ReUse Center is an important step toward this goal!

Finger Lakes ReUse earns nearly 75% of its revenues through material sales and program fees!  As a registered not-for-profit organization, Finger Lakes ReUse depends in part on charitable contributions to provide reuse services and community programming. Help us finalize the purchase of our Ithaca ReUse Center and further expand our ability to transform unnecessary waste into local resources, creating more quality jobs and job training opportunities. We need everyone’s help to meet our goal!

We’re asking for your support in this challenge to #ReinforceReUse – join us today!

IMPACTS & BENEFITS

EMPLOYMENT

Simple actions, major impact

From manufacturing to disposal, every part of a product’s life-cycle leads to greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to climate change. Our ReUse Centers kept 480 tons of materials out of landfills last year—and we’re working hard to expand our capabilities.

Working for a good cause

A living-wage employer with 33 employees and more than 60 regular volunteers, we believe reuse can support meaningful and engaging jobs here in Tompkins County, and nationwide. ReUse creates pathways to careers for local people who have previously experienced barriers to employment.

Low cost, high impact purchases

By transforming material donations into local revenue, we reduce disposal costs community-wide, provide affordable goods, and keep consumer dollars in the local economy. Our ReUse Materials Access Program gives back locally, so far connecting over 300  households in need with free and low-cost materials.

Leading the way toward waste-free

ReUse operates ReSET, a free job training program offering two separate tracks—Technology or Retail & Customer Service. ReSET participants can apply for competitive paid apprenticeships to extend their training.
